Weekend visit to Freiburg, Germany
10:56 AM
Last weekend, made plans to see some friends and family in Freiburg Germany. Basel is in such a great location. It took us 5 minutes to get out of Switzerland and over the border to Germany. The whole trip took maybe 45 minutes. The border patrol was a breeze. Maybe it is because I look Swiss/ German enough, or maybe it is because I am still remembering to bring my passport with me! Either way it is wonderful!
Freiburg is such a picturesque town. It looks very fairytale - esque except for a few modern buildings. The city center seems to be very small, although Freiburg itself is in fact larger than Basel. I think this is because the residential areas are very open. Larger streets with plenty of green space.
The day that we went was predicting snow. All over the region snow was quickly accumulating... except Basel and Freiburg. However, the snow was falling and it was cold enough that you needed to bundle up.
The Christmas market or "Weihnachtsmarkt" was not yet set up... that doesn't happen in many places until the last week in November. (This week!!) However, we did go to the standard market which is held near Freiburg's Cathedral Square or "Münsterplatz." The market is bustling with Gemüse (vegetable) stands on one half and fleish (meat) on the other. Interspersed are all kinds of other items for sale.
I tried the Neu Wine which is juice that has just begun the fermenting process. It is very tangy, so be prepared!
Then we were off to a traditional German restaurant.
Overall the city bewitched me. It may have been the NeuWine, or the snowflakes falling while strolling the market, or it could have been the architecture with the lofty hillside hotel watching over. Either way it was lovely and I can't wait to go back again. Next time hopefully I will be able to take some pictures. For now, enjoy these from manuela bacsik complements of Flickr:
